Year 2

There was no sitting around twiddling our fingers last year!

Our Year 2 children had an amazing year! To see what we did in 2014 - 2015 click here

September 2015

The year has got off to a wonderful start and the children are keen and enthusiastic to get back into the flow of school life.  This next week is a wonderful opportunity to really get to know the children and gain a better understanding of their abilities and interests. Following that we will be starting our project ‘Muddy Boots’ where the children will be helping to create a sensory garden in school made from recycled materials.  We welcome any support from Sylvan friends and families that have an interest in gardening or upcycling, please see Miss Bailey in Cherry class.  As always we are excited about the opportunities that the children have coming up this year and look forward to watching them grow and learn.

October 2015

Our Year 2 children have been having a thoughtful time planning their sensory garden. We have made bird feeders and designed art work to go into the garden. We have been thinking about our senses and how we use them. We have also looked at how plants grow and what helps them to grow well. We are really looking forward to bringing all our ideas and the things we have made together to create our garden in the coming weeks.

Thank you again for all your support so far.

5th October

There was a great hullabaloo in the Year 2 classrooms this morning as the teachers and children arrived to see their classrooms completely messed up! There were large footprints on the floor which looked like the footprints of a dragon. The children spent their day trying to work out what happened at the weekend and how on earth did a dragon get into Sylvan Infant School!

Our new sensory garden is looking fantastic! We have loved making all the new decorations for it and planting up the bulbs and plants.

November 2015

Firstly a massive thank you to Lush cosmetics and Talbot Heath Homebase for their support with the sensory garden. The children really loved helping to make the sensory garden a special area for everyone to enjoy. This term has got off to a wonderful start with treetop theatre coming into school telling the children tales of India. This project looks at the different cultures that celebrate with light and sill culminate in a celebration of light in December. We hope that children will enjoy the creative aspects of learning about another culture as well as understanding the geographical differences. Should you be able to offer any real life experiences of India that you could share with the children then please contact Mrs Hicks in Oak class.

December 2015

Year 2 are getting excited about Christmas and looking forward to sharing their celebration of light.  This term they have really enjoyed making clay diva lamps to show thier understanding of Divali.  Over the term the children have investigated different light sources, what material makes a good lamp holder and thought about how to be careful with candles.  In literacy they have learnt about Indian animals and this week they have started writing some stories about toys that come alive at night in Sylvan to show thier creativity.

During maths we have worked hard to improve both mental maths and written methods, they are getting speedy with numbers! As usual the work that children have brought for homework has been fantastic.

A big thank you for all your help.

January 2016

This term the children have come back to an exciting art week making walking fish, monkey hats, sharks and leaves – How exciting! Next week starts our new project based on the Arctic.  We will be learning all about what it’s like to live there, who lives there and what lives there! We are lucky to have a special visitor coming into school to share his experience of survival with the children.  As the term progresses the children will be writing a factual report about Arctic animals and a fantastic story about a little boy who is an explorer, all written in their new beautiful cursive handwriting.  In maths the focus is mostly on number work this term including addition, subtraction, multiplication and division so get practicing the times tables and number bonds for speedy maths!

Our Year 2 children loved listening to our visitor and real life explorer Sean. We learnt a lot about survival techniques and what types of food to take on an expedition.

February 2016

Year 2 have enjoyed learning about the Arctic this term.  After a fantastic visit from a real explorer we have gone on to learn all about the habitat as well as the different animals and people who live there.  The children have worked hard to produce some wonderfully creative homework as well as learning facts to satisfy their curiosity.   The children have made us and themselves so proud with the wonderful improvement in their handwriting. We look forward to organising a new challenge for the children which will help them improve their spelling.  In maths we have focused on lots of number work and the children are working really hard to use their number facts in all areas of maths. Well done everyone!

March 2016

Year 2 are being super healthy this term and we are learning all about the food that we eat, what’s good for us and what we need to avoid.  Over the next few weeks we will be learning about how to look after our bodies by keeping fit and being hygienic.  World book day was a great success and it was wonderful to see the children’s story writing brought to life by the winners of the character competition.

We would like to invite you to a Parent and Child Phonic Session in the classroom. This will be an

opportunity for you to watch as the class teacher leads a session on phonics, and afterwards, for you to carry out an activity with your Year 2 child. Save the date! Wednesday 16th March at 2.30pm
